Portugal plans to train 60 Angolan military personnel in the naval branch later this year

Portugal's ambassador to Angola, Pedro Pessoa and Costa, announced this Tuesday that the European country plans to train 60 Angolan troops this year in the naval area, within the scope of "renewed military cooperation" with Angola.

According to the Portuguese diplomat, Portugal and Angola have military advisory services in several areas of Defense, which are based on a framework of relations between both countries, guaranteeing that relations in this field "are well" and that it is "time to renew this framework" .

"And, certainly, this renewal of cooperation is always done according to the priorities and needs of each of the States, that's why we are now in this process", said Pedro Pessoa and Costa.

The diplomat, who was speaking at the end of the visit to the Portuguese Republic Ship (NRP) "Setúbal", since Monday moored in the port of Luanda, assured that the Portuguese military personnel who are in Angola "are satisfied" with the work they carry out.

"I can tell you that the military that we have here in Angola to provide advice, training and capacity building are happy, as well as I think the Angolan authorities are happy to have them here", he stressed.

Pedro Pessoa e Costa also noted that Portugal "annually increases" the number of Angolan graduates in the military field, regretting, however, the fall in this area recorded in 2020 due to the pandemic of covid-19.

"This year that passed with the pandemic we had a reduction, but we must also use all kinds of new training opportunities, be it 'online' too, so that everything goes back to normal," he explained.

"Angolans are always very welcome to Portugal to do their training and that is why we are always willing to listen to what the Angolan authorities have in terms of priorities so that this training can be done in Portugal", concluded Pessoa and Costa.
