Portuguese ship “Setúbal” in Angola to strengthen cooperation in the military field

The Portuguese Republic Ship (NRP) “Setúbal” is in Luanda, a patrol and rescue vessel, for the reinforcement of naval cooperation between Portugal and Angola, joint training, training and development of mutual actions in the military field.

The vessel designed and built in Portugal in 2018, specialized for maritime search and rescue, has been moored in the port of Luanda since Monday and this Tuesday received the visit of the Portuguese ambassador to Angola, Pedro Pessoa and Costa.

The NRP "Setúbal" is a vessel essentially for State authority operations at sea and is equipped with fisheries control and inspection, also counting with trained and reinforced personnel at the level of approach teams.

After arriving Sunday in Angola, by the sea coast of Ambriz, municipality of the province of Bengo, since Monday the NRP "Setúbal" reinforces bilateral cooperation in the naval domain with Angolan military personnel.

Pedro Pessoa and Costa and their direct collaborators, flanked by the deputy executive secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission in Angola and cadres of the Angolan War Navy received explanations from commander Artur Dias Marques about the valences of the ship.

According to the frigate captain Dias Marques, the vessel, with around 60 crew members on board, transported to Angola everything that the military forces can transport, especially support for cooperation and joint work.

"Support for cooperation, joint work, which we have been assuming for many years with Angola, we have always seen tasks always carried out within the scope of collaboration, training, training and mutual development, both for the Angolan military and for the Portuguese," the commander said to journalists.

Assembled with the latest technology, the ship also has teams of divers, for any necessary activity, military personnel, trained for internal and external threats and to support other maritime vessels.

The NRP team "Setúbal" has already developed actions with the special group of marines from the Ambriz base, namely joint training in the area of ​​assault on ships, small vessel operations, approach teams, magazine magazine, among others.

In Luanda, where he will be during this week, work is already underway with cadets from the Naval Academy, who visited the ship on Monday and Tuesday.

"And they will be like other Angolan entities and training schools making constant visits to the ship, we have already shown what the ship is, what our skills and capabilities are and we also try to respond to all the curiosities they have", stressed Captain Dias Marques.

After Luanda, the Portuguese ship leaves for Lobito, Benguela province, and during the route, the commander stressed, the crew will be in permanent communication with Luanda "to update the Angolan maritime database".

The NRP "Setúbal" left Lisbon on March 1st, already with tickets in Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, São Tomé and Príncipe and now Angola. On her return, she has scheduled tickets to São Tomé and Príncipe, Nigeria, Ghana and Cape Verde, until her arrival in Lisbon, scheduled for May 30th.
