Stadiums remain empty. FAF decides to cancel Girabola

Girabola's not coming back this year. The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) met with the leaders of the clubs that are part of the competition on Thursday morning, which decided - by consensus - to cancel the championship.

The competition had been put on pause in March, after the covid-19 pandemic had reached the country, but has now been cancelled. In other words, Girabola will no longer return this season.

The decision was announced this Thursday at the end of the meeting between the FAF and the 15 club officials, writes Angop. It is known that there was a consensus among all the clubs that led to this decision, which is mainly aimed at "safeguarding health and heavy spending on athletes whose contracts expire in May".

According to the clubs' spokesman at the meeting, Tomás Faria, two main reasons led the teams to decide in consensus for the end of the current season of the championship, namely the cautions surrounding the pandemic and the issue of athletes' contracts.

As for the contracts, he explained that "most clubs only have contracts for one season," he stressed, is the second reason for clubs to cancel the race.

"Therefore, after 31 May the contracts are all expired and the clubs are not able to renew them without there being a light at the end of the tunnel about the possible end of this pandemic," he explained.

Before Girabola was interrupted, Petro de Luanda led the standings, followed by 1 August. As they finished top of the table, it will be these two clubs that will represent the country in the African Champions League.

"To do sport we have to have health, health is in first place and we will let this pandemic end and safely return to our football activity," he said.

As for next season, Tomás Faria understands that it will have to start five weeks after the pandemic.
