Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 1423 in almost 32,000 cases

The number of deaths from covid-19 in Africa has risen to 1423 in the past few hours, with 31,933 cases of the disease reported in 52 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours the death toll has risen from 1374 to 1423, while infections have increased from 30,329 to 31,933.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 8409 to 9566.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 944 deaths in 12,988 registered cases.

In West Africa, there are 201 deaths and 8003 infections.

Southern Africa accounts for 101 dead in 4896 cases of covid-19.

The pandemic affects 52 of the 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon - concentrating about half of the infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt records 317 deaths, 4534 infected, South Africa counts 87 deaths and 4546 infected patients, while Morocco totals 161 fatalities and 4065 cases and Cameroon counts 56 dead and 1592 infected.

The highest number of fatalities is registered in Algeria (425), in 3382 infected patients.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of infections, with 106 cases, and keeps a record of one dead.

Guinea-Bissau records 53 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, with one death, and Mozambique has 76 reported cases of the disease.

Angola has 26 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two dead and São Tomé and Príncipe, the last Portuguese-speaking African country to detect the disease in its territory, has four positive cases.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), maintains 214 positive cases of infection and one dead, according to Africa CDC.
