Covid-19: Africa registers 1242 dead and almost 26 thousand infected

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa has risen to 1242 in the past few hours, with almost 26,000 registered cases of the disease in 52 countries, according to the latest pandemic statistics on that continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the number of registered deaths has risen from 1191 to 1242 while infections have increased from 24,686 to 25,937.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 6425 to 6534.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease with 10,990 cases, 867 dead and 2763 recovered patients.

In West Africa, there are 6183 infections, 158 dead and 1794 recovered patients.

Southern Africa accounts for 77 deaths in 3893 cases of covid-19 and 1123 recovered patients.

The pandemic affects 52 of the 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon - concentrating almost half of infections with the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt registers 3659 infected and 276 dead, South Africa counts 3635 infected patients and 65 dead, while Morocco totals 3446 cases and 149 fatalities and Cameroon counts 43 deaths out of 1163 infected.

The largest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria, which accounts for 402 deaths in 2910 infected patients.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of infections, with 73 cases and one dead.

Guinea-Bissau accounts for 52 people infected with the new coronavirus and Mozambique has 41 reported cases of the disease.

Angola has 25 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two died and São Tomé and Príncipe, the last Portuguese-speaking African country to detect the disease in its territory, has three positive cases.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), 83 positive cases of infection are confirmed, with the first death due to the disease being recorded, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to an AFP report, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 181,000 deaths and infected more than 2.6 million people in 193 countries and territories.

More than 593,500 patients were considered cured.
