Taking into account the vulnerabilities of pregnant women and newborns, the two main maternity hospitals in Luanda have developed a specific area for suspected cases of covid-19, including isolation rooms.

According to Maria Manuela Mendes, director general of Maternidade Lucrécia Paím, one of the rooms of the central maternity was transformed and equipped with material necessary to fight the disease. To the Jornal de Angola, the official said that the space is equipped with beds and fans, in order to guarantee treatment, if necessary, for pregnant women, parturients and newborns.

At the entrance to the maternity hospital, pregnant women will be subjected to a "rigorous interrogation process" about contacts with suspicious persons or travel. If there is any suspicion, the person is taken to the reserved area.

"As a precautionary measure, we guide our patients to wash their hands with soap and water on a daily basis, disinfecting them with alcohol gel," explained the maternity officer.

Maria Manuel Mendes also stressed that all prenatal consultations at the institution are guaranteed, remembering the importance of medical monitoring at this stage. The institution daily attends between 200 to 600 pregnant women, carrying out more than one to 100 deliveries daily.

With regard to Maternidade Ngangula, the director of the institution also ensured the "necessary" conditions for the reception of suspected cases. To Jornal de Angola, Lígia Alves also advanced the creation of a specific isolation room, in order to tend patients with suspected disease.

Each day, this maternity hospital in the capital receives between 120 and 150 parturients, performing an average of 60 to 70 deliveries per day.
