Covid-19: Africa with 196 deaths and more than 5700 confirmed infections

The number of deaths from covid-19 in Africa has risen to 196 in the last hours in a universe of more than 5700 confirmed cases in 49 countries, according to the latest statistics on the disease on the continent.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC), the number of positive cases of infection with the new coronavirus in Africa amounts to 5786, with deaths associated with the disease rising from 173 to 196 in the last hours.

With the first cases of the disease declared on Tuesday in Sierra Leone and Burundi, there are now 49 African countries and territories with a record of the disease.

Africa CDC also counts 412 recovered patients.

North Africa is the region with the most cases and deaths associated with the disease, accounting for 2437, 136 deaths and 259 recovered patients.

In southern Africa, there are 1436 infected, nine dead and 32 people have recovered.

West Africa reports 1031 cases of infection, which resulted in 27 deaths and 132 recoveries.

So far, no cases have been announced in São Tomé and Príncipe, South Sudan, Comoros, the Saharawi Republic, Lesotho and Malawi.

Thus, São Tomé and Príncipe is the only Portuguese-speaking country without any confirmed case.

Angola confirmed seven cases of infection with the new coronavirus, having recorded two deaths associated with covid-19, Cape Verde records six cases and one death, Mozambique confirmed eight, the same number as Guinea-Bissau.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, 15 positive cases of infection with the new coronavirus are confirmed.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 800,000 people worldwide, of whom more than 41,000 died.

Of the infection cases, at least 165,000 are considered cured.

After appearing in China in December, the outbreak spread across the world, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic.
