Mpox: Tanzania confirms first two cases of the disease

Tanzania confirmed on Tuesday the first two cases of Monkeypox virus (Mpox) infection, a potentially fatal disease that is affecting several African countries and for which the WHO maintains the highest level of alert.

Two individuals with symptoms were isolated and tested on Sunday, Health Minister Jenista Mhagama said in a statement posted on the social media platform X. “The suspected cases include a truck driver who arrived in Dar es Salaam from a neighboring country,” she added.

Tanzania shares a 756-kilometer border with Mozambique.

According to a report by the Africa CDC, the health agency of the African Union (AU) published last week, 6,034 cases of Mpox have been confirmed since January in 22 countries, resulting in 25 deaths.

At the end of February, the World Health Organization (WHO) maintained the maximum alert level for the Mpox epidemic, in view of the continuous increase in the number of cases and affected countries.

This after having declared a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, 2024, in response to the rapid spread of the disease in Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has a 2,511-kilometer border with Angola.
