Sonangol becomes the first African oil producer to join the “Aiming for Zero Methane” initiative

The national oil company became the first African oil producer to join the “Aiming for Zero Methane” initiative, whose purpose is to encourage the oil and gas industry to reduce methane emissions to close to zero.

:

In a statement, to which VerAngola had access, Sonangol informs that it has signed this initiative launched by the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), thus joining approximately a hundred companies that have made a commitment to try to reach, by 2030, the "almost zero methane emissions".

"Sonangol, as one of the largest oil producers on the continent, joins around 100 companies that have committed to doing everything possible to achieve, by 2030, almost zero methane emissions from the oil and gas installations operated", the note reads.

Regarding this membership, Gaspar Martins, president of the Board of Directors (PCA) of Sonangol, considered that it shows the company's commitment to "the future of the planet".

"As the first national oil and gas company in Africa to join this initiative, Sonangol demonstrates its commitment to the future of the planet," he said.

Thus, Bjørn Otto Sverdrup, president of OGCI's executive committee, was "satisfied" with Sonangol's subscription to the initiative. "I am pleased that Sonangol has become a signatory to Aiming for Zero. It is a privilege to have a major African oil company focused on reducing methane emissions and we look forward to working together", he said.

According to the statement, reducing "methane gas emissions into the environment is extremely important for meeting the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement and is a top priority for the OGCI, which launched the initiative in 2022".

It should also be noted that the goal of reducing emissions to close to zero also "meets the essentials of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, an agreement signed at the end of last year at COP28 in Dubai".
