João Lourenço and Adalberto da Costa Júnior meet on Friday

President João Lourenço and the leader of the main opposition party, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, will meet on Friday, announced the president of UNITA.

Adalberto Costa Júnior was speaking after the inauguration ceremony as a new member of the Council of the Republic, alongside the president of the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), Nimi a Simbi, and the nationalist Jorge Alicerces Valentim.

The president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), who returns to the Council of the Republic after being removed from the body following the annulment of the party's XIII Congress, held in 2019, said he would do what he could. reach to contribute to stability, peace and development, especially in an election year, so that this act is carried out "in an environment of absolute tranquility".

The inauguration is already one of the unwinding elements in the face of the "apprehension" that has been manifested. Another "important sign" is the audience he will have on Friday with João Lourenço.

"I have just been invited, tomorrow [Friday], to an audience with the President of the Republic. This element meets our expectation of institutional dialogue, and turns out to be the most important element in these challenges that we have to guarantee a future of stability", he declared.

On the other hand, the President said that he expects commitment and dedication from the new councilors, two of whom were appointed to the body by virtue of their functions, due to having been elected leaders of the respective political parties, which relatively recently held congresses of renewal of its directorates.

"What we expect from councilors is their experience, their knowledge", stressed the chief executive, recalling that, in a few months, Angolans go to the polls to choose their representatives in the National Assembly, becoming the candidate of the most voted party the President of the Republic.

"For sure, by all accounts, this is the year when the President most needs the work of advisers," he said.
Nimi a Simbi stressed that "it will support all acts and ideas that contribute to democracy" and see how it can support the improvement of the living conditions of Angolans. "We are living in a very critical moment, in which some courageous measures must be taken", he declared.

Jorge Alicerces Valentim, who was leader of UNITA and later joined the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), after falling out with the leadership of the "Black Rooster" party, promised "at 84, to work hard for the consolidation of peace and national reconciliation and help Angola's progress.

On Tuesday, the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, appointed Adalberto Costa Júnior, Nimi a Simbi and Jorge Alicerces Valentim as members of the Council of the Republic, ending the functions of Isaías Samakuva and Lucas Ngonda, as members of the consultative collegiate of the head of state.

The appointments stem from the need to adapt the composition of the Council of the Republic, due to changes in the presidency of UNITA and FNLA, following the notes of the Constitutional Court, which validated the congresses of the two political formations, held in 2021, where they were elected.
