Train circulation in Luanda may be suspended due to the amount of garbage on the railway line

The Luanda Railway may temporarily suspend the circulation of trains, for fear of derailment, as a result of the high amounts of waste concentrated on the railway.

:

According to CFL spokesman Augusto Osório, the amount of garbage affects mainly the railway lines in the areas of Boavista, Sambizanga and Viana.

Augusto Osório asked the administrations of these areas to "do their best to remove the garbage".

"Its intensified concentration on the railway line may take us one day to temporarily suspend the circulation of trains just for the removal of garbage and that is not our mission," said the official, in statements to the radio.

The CFL spokesman stressed that with the beginning of the rains, this situation is expected to cause greater constraints, stressing that the presence of garbage "alters the technical characteristics of the line".

"The line was made with a certain technical characteristic and it is only with these characteristics that the material must circulate as safely as possible. The presence of garbage generates this insecurity", he said.

According to Augusto Osório, it is necessary that those in law realize that the insecurity caused by garbage, generated by other activities developed illegally on the railroad, can also have this [derailment] as a consequence ", he stressed.

The capital is currently experiencing a problem of cleaning and solid waste collection, due to the suspension, by the Government of the Province of Luanda, of four of the six operators that had this responsibility.

In December 2020, the governor of Luanda province, Joana Lina, announced the suspension of contracts with companies due to the inability to continue to honor their commitments, assumed in 2016, with contracts signed in foreign currency and at the exchange rate of the day.

Since then, Luanda has presented a scenario of garbage heaps everywhere, a situation contested by citizens, who find as an alternative, to minimize the nauseating smell and worms, the burning of waste.

In February, President João Lourenço, allocated 44 million for the purchase of public cleaning and solid waste collection services.
