Angolan students in Portugal say that the day they can vote will be “party”

The president of the Association of Angolan Students in Portugal welcomed this Tuesday the announcement of a punctual revision of the Constitution in Angola and said that the day on which the diaspora in Portugal will be able to vote will be a “party”.

"There is a light at the end of the tunnel," Sivi Pedro told the Lusa news agency, saying that this announcement by President João Lourenço could be a sign of change.

On the possibility of the Diaspora voting, which should be real with this specific revision of the Constitution, the representative of Angolan students recalled that this is the will of the community.

Despite having doubts about the vote of the diaspora being a possibility already in the next elections in Angola (2022), Sivi Pedro guarantees that when that day comes it will be a party.

"It is going to be a party, for the diaspora and for me, that I never had the opportunity to vote, because when I was old for that, I was already in Portugal," he said.

However, he stressed that in the diaspora there is also a long way to go for this electoral participation, namely in terms of legalization and registration.

João Lourenço announced this Tuesday, at the start of the work of the second ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, in Cidade Alta, in Luanda, a specific revision of the Constitution.

The purpose of this one-off review is, among others, to clarify the mechanisms of political oversight, to give voting rights to residents abroad and to eliminate the principle of gradualism in municipalities.
