Angolan who fights cancer in West Africa wants to help Angola deal with the disease

He is an Angolan, an engineer specialized in radiotherapy and wants to contribute to the fight against cancer in the country. Moisés Natal Domingos was received by the Angolan ambassador in Ethiopia - where he works - and anticipates a return to the country based on a personal contribution to national health.

In a country where cancer is becoming more and more visible, largely due to the 'fault' of the advancement of medicine, data from the Angolan Institute for Cancer Control registered about 1400 cases of the disease in 2020.

It is also known that the most frequent incidences are breast cancer (20 to 21 percent of all cases), cervical cancer (16 to 17 percent) and prostate cancer (6 to 7 percent). Between five and six percent of cases recorded in the past year involve children.

However, data from the World Health Organization (WHO) contradict these figures and show an even greater progression of the disease in the country, estimating that about 15,000 cases of cancer are registered each year in Angola, with an associated probability of 10,000 deaths.

It was in this context that Moisés Domingos, a specialist linked to a program to fight cancer in West Africa, expressed his concern about the scarcity of technical and superior equipment of electromedicine, specialized in radiotherapy, for the treatment of cancer patients in the country.

Currently working for an Israeli company, the 30-year-old Angolan, trained in South Africa, has lived in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, for about a year.

Received by the Angolan ambassador to the country, Francisco da Cruz, the engineer referred to travel frequently to countries in the eastern region of the continent to install and maintain equipment related to the treatment of different types of cancer.

According to Angop, Moisés does not hide his desire to work in Angola, showing himself in favor of the authorities intensifying awareness and information campaigns in order to curb the growing rate of the disease in his population.

The specialist thus defends the urgency of technical and human support to meet the country's demand, and the population often goes to the hospital with the disease at an advanced stage.
