Covid-19: Africa with 373 more dead and 11,339 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 373 more covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, for a total of 106,095 since the pandemic began, and 11,339 new cases of infection, according to the latest official data on the continent.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 3,975,045 and that recovered in the last 24 hours is 11,814, for a total of 3,552,813 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the worst affected region, with 1,857,740 people infected and 57,523 people killed by the disease on Tuesday. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, registers 1,521,706 cases and 50,803 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit by the pandemic, with 1,182,766 infected and 33,703 deaths.

East Africa counts 421,301 infections and 7789 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 402,953 and the number of deaths is 5223.

Central Africa has 110,285 cases and 1857 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 11,038 deaths and 187,094 infected, followed by Morocco with 8683 deaths and 486,325 cases.

Among the most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 8225 deaths and 238,017 cases, Algeria, with 3020 deaths and 114,290 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2442 deaths and 167,133 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 698 deaths and 62,703 cases, followed by Angola (515 deaths and 21,108 cases of infection), Cape Verde (154 deaths and 15,806 cases), Equatorial Guinea (96 deaths and 6371 cases), Guinea-Bissau (49 deaths and 3312 cases) and Sao Tome and Principe (32 deaths and 1961 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,593,872 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 116.7 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.
