In a note distributed to the media, WHO says that vaccines will also make it possible to recover people's economy and livelihoods.

"This first step towards vaccination offers us a light at the end of the tunnel for the protection of populations. We also need to continue to work together to strengthen preventive public health measures against covid-19, while improving access to health services and quality treatments ", said Djamila Cabral cited in the document.

This Tuesday, Angola received 624 thousand doses of the AstraZeneca - Oxford vaccine from the Instituto Sérum da India, under the Covax initiative, which aims to ensure the equitable distribution of vaccines against covid-19, worldwide.

The Angolan Health Minister, Sílvia Lutucuta, announced at the time of receiving the batch that the first vaccines will start to be administered this Tuesday.

The WHO note stresses that with this first batch of vaccines, estimated at around 10 percent of the needs of the first phase of vaccination in Angola, the Government will immunize health professionals, vulnerable people and those with complicated comorbidities.

According to the head of the Global Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI), Seth Berkley, during the coming weeks, Covax must deliver vaccines to all participating economies to ensure that those most at risk are protected, wherever they live.

"We now need governments and companies to confirm their support for Covax and help us defeat this virus as soon as possible," said Seth Berkley.

The delivery of vaccines to Angola is part of a first Covax award round that will continue in the coming days and weeks, worldwide and across the African region, with the expectation that 2.5 million doses of vaccines will be delivered to the country. AstraZeneca / Oxford until the middle of this year.

"The Covax initiative is playing a crucial role in global efforts to ensure fair, accessible and equitable access to covid-19 vaccines for the poorest countries in the world, the most marginalized communities and the most vulnerable populations", emphasizes in the document.

As part of Angola's efforts to prevent and combat the pandemic, the Ministry of Health, with the support of Covax partners, developed a National Immunization Plan to ensure safe and equitable access to covid-19 vaccines, including several actions that they aim to strengthen the infrastructure and storage of the cold chain, train vaccinators, generate demand, as well as manage misinformation about vaccination.

The arrival of vaccines against covid-19 in Angola marks another milestone in the main goals of the Covax initiative, as part of its effort to provide at least two billion doses of vaccines by the end of the current year.
