Covid-19: Africa records 173 deaths and exceeds 5,000 cases

The number of covid-19 deaths in Africa has risen to 173 in recent hours with confirmed cases exceeding 5,000 in 47 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent.

According to the bulletin of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of positive cases of new coronavirus infection in Africa is 5,255, with deaths associated with the disease rising from 152 to 173 in the last few hours.

With the first three cases of the disease to be declared this Tuesday in Botswana, there are now 47 African countries and territories with a record of the disease.

Africa CDC still has 371 recovered patients.

North Africa is the region with the most cases and deaths associated with the disease, accounting for 2,167, 118 deaths and 243 recovered patients.

In southern Africa, there are 1,406 infected, five dead and 31 people who have managed to recover.

West Africa registers 966 cases of infection, resulting in 25 deaths and 82 recoveries.

In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola confirmed seven cases of infection with the new coronavirus, with two deaths associated with covid-19, Cape Verde registered six cases and one death, Mozambique confirmed eight, the same number as Guinea-Bissau.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, the authorities confirmed 14 positive cases of infection with the new coronavirus.

Of the Portuguese-speaking countries, only São Tomé and Príncipe has no confirmed case.

Apart from Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Burundi, South Sudan, Comoros, the Sahrawi Republic, Lesotho and Malawi have no registered cases according to the bulletin.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 750,000 people worldwide, of whom more than 36,000 have died.

Of the cases of infection, at least 148,500 are considered cured.

After the outbreak broke out in China in December, the outbreak spread around the world, which led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.
