Covid-19: seven positive cases and two first deaths to register

Angola recorded the first two deaths of people infected with the covid-19 virus and the number of positive cases rose to seven, announced the Minister of Health, Silvia Lutucuta.

Two Angolan citizens died on Saturday due to the disease, said the minister, at a press conference in Luanda.

One of the citizens, 59, a habitual resident in Portugal, had arrived in Angola on 12 March.

"He was hospitalized in the last days at the clinic Girassol and had a picture with a very fast evolution, with respiratory failure", said Silvia Lutucuta, explaining that the patient had other associated diseases.

The second case, a 37-year-old man, also Angolan, residing in Luanda, arrived from Lisbon on March 13 and was hospitalized for a week.

Sílvia Lutucuta stated that 370 samples have been processed to date with seven positive results, 21 of which are being processed.

The Minister of Health said that a "mass screening of travelers from risky flights" is being carried out in the quarantine centers.

The work has already been completed at the Calumbo II center, is continuing at Calumbo I and will also be done shortly at the Victoria Garden center.

At the moment, 1089 people are in institutional quarantine across the country, of which 547 are in the province of Luanda.

"The observance of the state of emergency continues," said the head of the Ministry of Health, once again appealing to the awareness of Angolans, so that the transmission chain can be cut now. "Staying at home is the best solution," he said.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 667,000 people worldwide, of whom more than 31,000 have died. in cases of infection, at least 134,700 are considered cured.

The number of deaths caused by covid-19 in Africa has risen to 134 with cumulative cases approaching 4300 cases in 46 countries, according to the latest update on pandemic statistics.
