Can mothers with Covid-19 still breastfeed? Expert says it's safe

Elisa Gaspar, a staff member of the Angolan Medical Association, assured that mothers who are breastfeeding babies can continue to do so. The assurance comes after some mothers have shown concern and not knowing whether their children can become infected by Covid-19 through breastfeeding.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) guides the maintenance of breastfeeding for lack of elements that prove that breast milk can spread the coronavirus," explained the expert in an interview with the newspaper Opaís.

Elisa Gaspar also said that mothers who want to breastfeed and who are "in the right clinical conditions to do so" can continue breastfeeding.

However, she left some recommendations: The infected mother should be "guided to observe the measures presented below, with the aim of reducing the risk of transmission of the virus through respiratory droplets during contact with the child, including breastfeeding".

A mother who is infected with coronavirus should, according to the staff, wash her hands for "at least 20 seconds before touching" the baby or extracting the milk. She should also wear a face mask that covers her mouth and nose and, during breastfeeding, should "avoid talking or coughing".

If you cough or sneeze, the face mask should be changed immediately, she adds, recalling that if the milk is extracted, the pump should be cleaned according to the recommendations of the health authorities.

Faced with the situation that the country and the world are facing, the baton revealed that the order is working to ensure that the standards of prevention are met by the population and is still carrying out training activities for health professionals.

"I think that each of us has this responsibility to inform the less enlightened about Covid-19," she added.
