The position was expressed by the coordinator of the United Nations system in Angola, Paolo Balladelli, after a meeting held on Tuesday with the Minister of State for Social Action, Carolina Cerqueira.

Paolo Balladelli also expressed the willingness of the United Nations to evaluate the sanitary facilities in health units, in the acquisition of protection equipment for health professionals, as well as in the activation of solid strategies for social protection, to mitigate the economic and social consequences for the most vulnerable population.

The meeting also attended by representatives of various UN agencies - UNICEF, WHO, UNDP and FAO - reiterated the need to give priority during the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, together with the health component, the food production sectors, energy and logistics.

The UN system coordinator in Angola congratulated the Government on the way it has conducted the response to Covid-19, "because this is a moment that requires coordinated, decisive and innovative political action by all governments".

In Angola there are three confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus, responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.

On that occasion, the 12 agencies present in Angola with cooperation programs reiterated their willingness to support the Government in several important areas, making available human, financial and logistical resources to ensure that the response is the most appropriate and with reduced adverse effects.

The United Nations called for the follow-up of the individual and collective prevention measures already defined by the Government in the scope of the current Response Plan, and drew attention to aspects "crucial in the analysis of the countries severely affected by the pandemic", namely the implementation, with anticipation of extreme measures, of physical distancing and hygiene to stop the spread of the virus transmission.

Measures also include providing tests to monitor each person with flu symptoms and induce strict quarantine of positive cases to prevent local transmission and increase clinical capacities and the protection of health personnel.
