Angola and Zambia sign cooperation agreement in the electricity sector

Angola and Zambia have signed an agreement for cooperation in the electricity sector, under which the Angolan municipalities bordering Zambia will receive electricity from that country.

The National Transportation Network (RNT), by Angola, and Zambian Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO), by Zambia, will be the main operators of the cooperation agreement, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The holders of the two Energy ministries, namely João Baptista Borges and Matthew Njhuwa, gave indications that the two public operators should immediately start the actions contained in the agreement, namely, the creation of mechanisms to enable the constant exchange of information and exchange, as well as the implementation of transmission interconnection projects.

Prior to the signing of the agreement, the Minister of Energy and Water also attended the seventh meeting of the Council of Ministers of ZAMCOM, a regional body made up of eight countries, whose purpose is the management of the Zambezi river basin.

On the same occasion, the Angolan Ambassador to Zambia, Azevedo Francisco, who accompanied the visit, highlighted "the good moment in relations between Angola and Zambia" and announced that an agreement will be signed in March, in Luanda, for the construction of the oil pipeline, destined to supply oil derivatives from Angola to Zambia.

In April this year, the Zambian Energy Minister will visit Angola with a delegation composed of technicians and businessmen from the electricity sector, aiming to identify other areas of common interest and promote the exchange of experiences.

The supply of energy to Zambia is assured, in 85 percent, by four hydroelectric sources and a thermal station.
