Angola for the first time at the opening of the judicial year of the African Court

The country's justice system is participating, for the first time, in the opening of the 2025 judicial year and in the plenary session of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. At the event, which takes place between Monday and Wednesday in Tanzania, the country is represented by Judge Adelino Fernando Costa Muhongo, President of the SADC Administrative Tribunal – SADCAT.

"The honorable judge, Adelino Fernando Costa Muhongo, president of the SADC Administrative Tribunal – SADCAT, will participate from 3 to 5 February, in the city of Arusha, Republic of Tanzania, in the plenary session of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, the opening of the African Court's 2025 judicial year, and the thematic seminar 'Doing Justice for Women Through the Right to Reparations'", informed the Superior Council of the Judiciary, in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

The invitation to Adelino Muhongo was made by the President of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. "The Angolan judge was invited by the President of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, Imani D. Aboud, to participate in the three important legal events," the note says.

Thus, "it is the first time that an Angolan exercises and presides over a judicial body in the SADC region and it is also the first time that an Angolan magistrate is present at the opening of the judicial year, at the seminar and at the plenary session of the largest judicial court in the African continent".

This invitation comes to recognize the country's judicial system and also to elevate national justice on the international stage. "The invitation reflects the recognition of the Angolan judicial system, personified by Adelino Fernando Costa Muhongo, judge appointed by deliberation no. 01/CSMJ/2012, of June 28, and currently placed in the judicial province of Luanda (...), and raises the prestige of the country's justice system in the international context", says the note.

It is worth noting that the solemn ceremony and the seminar will be attended by "representatives of African Union member states, international, regional and national courts, African Union bodies with a human rights mandate, national human rights institutions, legal professionals and representatives of the Bar Association, as well as civil society organizations and other entities involved in the work of the courts and the protection of human rights on the continent".
