FAF admits the possibility of reducing teams in the next Girabola for financial reasons

The vice-president of the Angolan Football Federation (FAF) José Carlos Miguel admitted today the possibility of the next edition of Girabola being played with fewer teams, compared to the current 16.

At issue is the withdrawal of Cuando Cubango FC, from Girabola, for financial reasons, a fact that concerns the governing body of Angolan football, as well as fans of the sport in Angola.

In recent years, several teams, after ascending to the first division of Angolan football, threaten to withdraw from Girabola, due to lack of financial means, and others withdraw in the middle of the competition, which motivates the FAF to guarantee that in the 2023 edition /24 of the Angolan championship will not allow similar actions to be repeated.

“We have increasingly strict licensing rules, and for the next edition of Girabola we are going to implement new rules. There has to be seriousness in our clubs when they sign up. […] The guarantee will have to be real, otherwise what could happen is that we have a championship with a reduced number of teams”, he guaranteed.

José Carlos Miguel admitted, on the other hand, that the recent withdrawal of Cuando Cubango FC, before the start of the second round of Girabola, hurt the sporting truth.

“It was with great displeasure that we became aware of this matter. Today, due to this withdrawal, our championship is completely unbalanced and, worse than that, it hurts the sporting truth, insofar as those who managed to score points against Cuando Cubango FC, in the first round, which already gave them some encouragement , for the second round and for the final accounts, but today he sees the points lost” he admitted.
