Voting on draft resolution A/ES-11L.7 – designated Principles of the United Nations Charter Underlying a Comprehensive, Just and Enduring Peace in Ukraine – took place this Thursday, on the eve of the conflict's one-year anniversary.

The resolution was approved in a special emergency session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), with 141 countries voting in favor, seven votes against and 32 abstentions.

According to a press release, quoted by Jornal de Angola, "in the explanation of the vote before the vote, the Permanent Representative of the Mission of Angola to the United Nations, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, highlighted the fact that the project resolution does not reflect the contribution of all Member States, aiming at their enrichment in the sense of having Ukraine and Russia reunited, a more stable and stronger region, and an increasingly peaceful world".

The official also said that Angola will abstain during the vote, as they are of the "opinion that operative paragraph nine is not conducive to the creation of an environment conducive to the start of peaceful negotiations".

However, according to the communiqué, quoted by Jornal de Angola, the diplomat also considered that the project portrays "a positive step in the efforts that have been sent by the international community" that show clear signs of support for the "search process for a peaceful solution to the conflict", aiming to bring both parties closer to lasting peace in Eastern Europe.

The official also stressed that Angola "defends the notion of accountability for crimes committed by either party". "However, we do not think it is the right time to have such a paragraph in the resolution so as not to undermine the Secretary General's efforts and initiatives to promote a lasting and comprehensive peace between the two countries," she added.
