Rice price has increased by 139 percent in the last five years

In the last five years, the price of rice has increased by 139 percent: the value of this product rose from 412 kwanzas in 2017 to 985 kwanzas at the end of last year.

However – according to accounts made by Expansão, based on data from the National Institute of Statistics resulting from a survey of around 15,000 prices applied in recent years in the formal and informal markets of the capital – this year the price of rice suffered a slight decline at the end of January, with the figure fixed at around 850 kwanzas.

Analyzing the last five years, it is possible to see that, in annual terms, 2017 was the year in which the price of rice changed less. In January of that year, a kilo of long rice was being sold at 412 kwanzas and at the end of the year it was being sold at 470 kwanzas.

In the following year, prices began to undergo significant changes, due to the exchange rate devaluation and the change in the monetary policy of the BNA, writes Expansão.

At the beginning of 2018, the kilo of rice was being marketed at 479 kwanzas, having increased to 527 kwanzas in December.

In 2019, the upward trend resumed: the price went from 532.4 kwanzas at the beginning of the year to 617.2 kwanzas at the end of 2019.

2020 was no different. The kilo began to be sold at 637 kwanzas at the beginning of the year, reaching 839 kwanzas in December of that year.

The following year, the price of rice inflated by about 30 percent. In January, the product hit the shelves at 705 kwanzas and in December 2021 it was being marketed at 985 kwanzas.
