João Lourenço conveys a message of solidarity to the PR of Guinea-Bissau

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, conveyed a message of encouragement and solidarity to his Guinea-Bissau counterpart, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, following Tuesday's attempted coup d'état.

The head of state "called the President of Guinea-Bissau mid-morning on Wednesday, February 2", according to a note posted on the Presidency's Facebook page.

Angola, as acting president of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), had already "vehemently condemned the attempt to seize power by force in Guinea-Bissau", also a member state of the organization, welcoming the "firm response of the Guinean authorities that led to the restoration of order".

Several shots were heard Tuesday around lunchtime next to the Government Palace of Guinea-Bissau where a Council of Ministers was being held, with the presence of the President of the Republic, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and the Prime Minister, Nuno Nabiam.

However, according to a government source, the military entered the Government Palace at around 5:20 pm and ordered the government officials who were in the building to leave.

The coup attempt has already been condemned by the African Union, the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), through the Angolan Presidency, by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde and Spain.

Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Palace, the Guinean President stated that it was a "well-prepared and organized act that could also be related to people related to drug trafficking".

The attack proved at least six dead and four wounded, according to military and medical sources.
