Chief of Police defends concrete steps for proximity policing

The commander-general of the National Police of Angola defended this Tuesday the need to take concrete steps in the implementation of proximity policing, to work on the anticipation and prevention of criminal actions.

Arnaldo Carlos was speaking at the opening of the festivities alluding to the 46th anniversary of the National Police, marked with a lecture on "The National Police of Angola and its Contribution to the Fight against Corruption and Impunity".

According to Arnaldo Carlos, the success of missions to maintain public order and tranquility requires the joint efforts of the entire staff of the corporation, which must strive for high levels of professionalism, self-denial, organization and discipline, maintaining perfect alignment with the bodies of defense and security of the administration of justice, churches and society in general.

"The proximity policing that we intend goes beyond the allocation of foot patrols inside the neighborhoods and meetings of community security councils. On this matter, we must work with the superior command in the organization of a meeting on the various models of proximity policing. existing ones, in order to learn the successful experiences in other realities", he said.

For the commander-general of the PNA, this is the way for a modern police "which must take the necessary qualitative leap, moving from an essentially reactive police to a proactive police, based on a primary prevention strategy".

Arnaldo Carlos stressed that it is a priority to invest in the continuous training of the staff to guarantee an efficient fight against crime, which will imply the adequacy of the police training system.

"It is urgent that we raise the quality of teaching in our police training schools, consolidating the operational and theoretical aspect, without neglecting the patriotic aspect that translates into love for the country and cultivation of its traditions, which presupposes referring here to the need to create the Chair of Patriotic Education in Schools", he said.

According to Arnaldo Carlos, it is necessary to value and enhance police schools more, stressing that the corporation needs "competent, truly professional and, above all, honest and polite police officers".

"We also need less arrogant agents, more available to help those who request", he stressed.

Regarding the fight against corruption and impunity, the PNA commander-general said that the police constitute an essential force associated with the Angolan executive's efforts in this desideratum, both externally and internally.
