Price of building materials suffered inflation of around 20 percent last year

The price of construction materials rose by around 20 percent last year, according to data from the Construction Materials Price Index (IPMC) released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The results also reveal that the list of materials that registered the highest inflation is led by wood and plywood, with an increase of around 28.5 percent.

:

According to the IPMC, quoted by Expansão, between December 2020 and December 2021, the value of construction materials increased by 19.9 percent.

The biggest increase in prices was observed in wood and plywood (28.5 percent), followed by beams, joists and battens (26.7 percent), other synthetic products (26.4 percent) and aluminum (26 percent cent).

In the same period, according to accounts made by Expansão, the data point to an inflation of values that left a reference of 136.5 at the end of 2020, to about 163.6 percent last year.

INE data also reveal that sales of these materials rose 1.9 percent in December compared to the previous month.

The companies in the sector, according to Expansão, consider that the increase in demand in the market is one of the reasons that justify the inflation of the price of products, which has given rise to a small shortage of these materials.

The implementation of the Integrated Program for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM) has stimulated the sector. Against this backdrop, operators expect a recovery in the economic outlook, although there are still issues of shortage of orders due to reduced public spending.

According to an assessment by the Association of Civil Construction and Public Works Contractors of Angola (AECCOPA) the market is unbalanced and there are fewer and fewer suppliers of these materials, with the few that still remain standing to raise prices, squeezed by the devaluation. exchange rate and increased exports to countries on the continent.

Cited by Expansão, AECCOPA considers that the increases reflect the lack of control in this market since the beginning of the economic crisis in the country.
