Electronic payments gain ground with a third of transactions being made on mobile

About a third of transactions carried out in the national payment system are carried out via mobile phones. The demand for digital means to pay for goods and services has been gaining strength in recent times, with last year 32.7 percent of operations carried out in the national payment system were carried out via mobile phones.

Last year, a total of 338 million operations were carried out via the Multicaixa Express platform, which represents a significant growth when compared to the 19 million operations that took place in 2019, the year in which the platform began to be used.

Thus, according to accounts made by Expansão based on data from Empresa Interbancária de Serviços (EMIS), in 2021, the number of operations carried out via mobile phone represented around 32.7 percent of transactions carried out in the national payment system.

This translates into a sharp rise compared to 2019, in which transactions carried out accounted for 3.3 percent.

In addition, the amount handled by Multicaixa Express also grew: last year 4,954.6 billion kwanzas were mobilized against the 257 billion kwanzas handled in 2019.

The executive director of EMIS, Joaquim Caniço, quoted by Expansão, said that the platform is safe and regretted the emergence of some cases of scams: "Unfortunately we have seen some scams with MCX Express, practiced through social engineering, where criminals they take advantage of the distraction of unsuspecting people and take possession of their channel access credentials. We have been following this phenomenon and we have implemented several improvements in order to mitigate this situation".

Multicaixa Express has 585,951 valid users, of which 402,160 are active.
