Port of Luanda revenues soared to 82.6 billion kwanzas last year

Direct management of the terminal and revenue from contracts with fixed and variable rents were the main reasons given by the company's management to justify this growth.

Omar Matos, director of accounting and assets of the Port of Luanda, explained that the company's balance also benefited from the exchange rate, due to freight indexed to the dollar, and the departure of Soportos from the management of the cargo terminal.

Cited by Expansão, the official explained that this departure accounted for over half (53 percent) of the port's total revenues last year.

Omar Matos, who was speaking during a review of the port's activities, also revealed that over the last two years the Port of Luanda's revenues have stood at around 49 billion kwanzas.

Net results also grew in 2020: the port invoiced about 31 billion kwanzas, a significant increase when compared to the 15.7 billion recorded in 2019, he advanced.

As for traffic, in 2020, the Port of Luanda handled 3456 ships, with 4024 ships having been docked, representing a 14 percent reduction compared to 2019.

The movement of goods also suffered a drop last year: 477,000 fewer tons of goods were handled, compared to the same period in 2019.

The entry of goods into the country also decreased: 6.6 million tons of goods entered, 7 percent less than in 2019 (7.1 million tons).

These declines are justified with the appearance of covid-19, admitted the official.

Last year, the Port of Luanda recorded an increase in the area of service provision. The company profited 24.3 billion kwanzas in this area, registering a 505 percent increase compared to the 4 billion collected in 2019.

Personnel costs also grew in 2020: in 2019 the company spent 7.9 million kwanzas while in 2020 10.7 billion kwanzas were spent. According to Expansion, this increase is justified with the updating of careers and the hiring of 22 new employees.

Despite the increase in revenue, the company still has to make some adjustments. The administrator for the commercial area of the company, Miguel Pipa, revealed that the Port of Luanda still has to align itself to meet international and regional standards.

For this a plan will be created, which may be ready by the end of this month, in order to guide the company's activities.

Miguel Pipa also admitted that the concession of the terminal management to Dubai Ports World (DP World) is an added value.
