Luaty Beirão denounces the president of the Supreme Court in an open letter to the government

It was through an open letter, addressed to the President of the Republic and other government bodies, that the activist Luaty Beirão denounced the president of the Supreme Court, judge Joel Leonardo, for practicing acts that he considers to be an abuse of power.

:

In the letter, Luaty Beirão questions why the president of the Supreme Court has chosen his daughter, "without having the competence" to participate in a training in Portugal.

"Can Angolans and the international community believe that in Angola there is a serious fight against corruption and impunity when the President of the Supreme Court of Angola, as Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, selects his daughter, without having the competence to do so, to participate in a training in Portugal, thus practicing an act of nepotism, publicly denounced by AJA - Association of Judges of Angola - with documentary evidence, in flagrant violation of the Law of Public Probity and rules of competence of the Supreme Judicial Council?

The letter, which is also signed by Fernando Macedo, also raises doubts about the confidence of Angolans and the international community in the fight against corruption that has been carried out in the country: "Can Angolans and the international community believe that there is a serious fight against corruption and impunity in Angola when the AJA brings a precautionary procedure for the suspension of the act of nepotism of the President of the Supreme Court and the case is not decided by this court in a timely manner as required by law?

The document further states that the President of the Supreme Court, before selecting his daughter, "practiced acts of equal gravity" that violate the Public Probity Law, which applies to the President of the Supreme Court and the Superior Council of the Judiciary and prohibits nepotism.

"The President of the Supreme Court, in the capacity of President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, without competence to do so, with abuse of power, annulled a judicial decision of the Benguela District Court," he denounces, adding that Joel Leonardo, in the capacity of President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, according to a public denunciation, "violated rules of the competition for the position of President of the National Electoral Commission."

"Despite the acts he has committed, some of which indisputably constitute crimes, the President of the Supreme Court of Angola remains in office, constituting an example of undeniable impunity, which, it seems, has the complicit silence of various organs of the State," the letter adds.
