Portuguese MEP questions Brussels on defense of human rights in Angola

Socialist MP for the European Parliament, Isabel Santos, questioned this Thursday the position of Brussels on the defense of human rights in Angola, in view of “recent acts” in the country, in questions sent to the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell.

:

In previous considerations to the questions that he leaves to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, the MEP signed that, "under the fulfillment of the state of emergency, there are worrying reports of episodes in that police action resulted in civilian deaths ".

The "use of excessive, disproportionate and lethal force by the security forces weakens (...) the human rights framework in Angola", so the socialist asks Borrel "what is the position of the EU delegation in Angola - namely in defense human rights - in view of the way in which these recent acts have developed ".

Isabel Santos does not elaborate on what "recent acts" refers to, but Angola made international news due to the events on the 30th of January in the mining town of Cafunfo, in the province of Lunda Norte, the scene of incidents between the police and the people that resulted an undetermined number of dead and wounded.

The MEP also wants to know "what conclusions were reached and what concrete measures were agreed in the context of the last annual meeting between the Ministry of Justice of Angola and the EU delegation, of 17 November 2020".

Isabel Santos considers that "the change in political leadership in Angola in 2017, with the replacement of José Eduardo dos Santos by João Lourenço, has so far failed to meet the expectations of profound reform that the country needed and the people yearned for, after almost 40 years of autocratic governance ".

"On the contrary," argues the MEP. "The typology of the political system and the constitutional ambiguity that characterizes it have been maintained. The economic crisis and the abuses among powerful people that put the country at the bottom of the benchmarks at the global level have also been maintained," she says.
