Covid-19: Africa with 373 more deaths and 11,782 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 373 more deaths in the last 24 hours due to covid-19, for a total of 102,470 deaths, and 11,782 new cases of the new coronavirus, according to the latest official pandemic data in the region.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the total number of cases is 3,856,581 and the number of those recovered in the last 24 hours in the organization's 55 member states was again higher than the number of new cases (12,771), bringing the total to 3,421,526.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,821,809 cases and 55,822 deaths. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, accounts for 1,507,448 infections and 49,523 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic: 1,153,445 infected and 32,525 dead.

East Africa counts 398,463 infections and 7472 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 382,213 and the number of deaths is 4899.

Central Africa passed the 100,000 cases this Thursday (100,651) and records 1752 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 10,495 deaths and 180,051 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8592 deaths and 482,128 cases.

Among the most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 7869 deaths and 230,443 cases, Algeria, with 2972 deaths and 112,369 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2316 deaths and 155,234 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 608 deaths and 56,920 cases, followed by Angola (501 deaths and 20,640 cases of infection), Cape Verde (145 deaths and 15,161 cases), Equatorial Guinea (91 deaths and 5852 cases), Guinea-Bissau (48 deaths and 3171 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (27 deaths and 1672 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,486,116 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 112 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
