Africa with 491 more dead and 13,425 infected with covid-19 in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 491 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours for a total of 96,732 deaths, and 13,425 new cases of infection, according to the latest official pandemic data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 3,703,913 and the number of recovered in the last 24 hours is 19,095, for a total of 3,241,258 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,763,667 infected and 52,666 killed. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,482,412 cases and 47,145 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,120,390 infected and 30,969 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 374,665 infections and 7085 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 351,979 and that of deaths is 4364.

Central Africa has 93,212 cases and 1648 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 9804 deaths and 171,390 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8436 fatalities and 476,689 cases.

Among the six most affected countries are Algeria, with 2928 deaths and 109,690 cases, Ethiopia, with 2167 fatalities and 144,249 infections, and Kenya, with 1791 deaths and 102,221 infected.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registers 487 deaths and 20,210 cases of infection, followed by Mozambique (486 deaths and 46,736 cases), Cape Verde (138 deaths and 14,543 cases), Equatorial Guinea (87 deaths and 5663 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (46 dead and 2826 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (18 killed and 1385 cases).
