Maria Freitas managed to finish the 50 meters breaststroke in 37 seconds and 84 tenths. This was the best time achieved, so far, in the race by the national team - which has 25 athletes competing on behalf of the country.
The swimmer, only 22 years old, shone in the opening race of the championship, after last year's edition was left blank.
The African Zonal Championship started this Thursday and continues until 23 February, Sunday. The competition is taking place in Gaberone, Botswana.
