New party sets goals for municipal and general elections

Angola's Liberation and Social Unity Party (PLUS), presented Wednesday in Luanda, wants to participate in the country's first local elections, scheduled for 2020 and then the general elections of 2022, said the coordinator of the installation commission.

Albino Wassuca, who was speaking to Lusa at the end of the ceremony for the public presentation of the new political formation, said he was sure that the party he led "will take part in the local elections", but if it does not, "the target will be the general elections".

For the politician, the local elections "should reduce the current suffering of Angolans", believing in the political will of parliamentarians for the conclusion and discussion of the local legislative package.

"Our initial goal is the municipalities and then we're going to ascend to the general elections," said Albino Wassuca, guaranteeing that the training has already collected, in 12 provinces, where it has representation, nearly 60 percent of the signatures required for legalization before the Constitutional Court (TC).

At least 7500 signatures are required for the legalization of a party in Angola, according to the Law on Political Parties.

According to the PLUS coordinator, the political force should reach all 18 provinces within three weeks, noting that the process of collecting signatures should be completed within the next two months.

"We believe in the endorsement of the TC, because we believe in the separation of power and the most important thing is to comply with the law and we expect the court to fulfil its role," he said.

The Angolan Liberation and Social Unity Party was formed in October 2019.
