Minister responds to 'Tchize' and defends separation between private and public sector in the media

The Minister of Social Communication, Nuno Caldas Albino, reacted this Thursday to criticisms by businesswoman Welwitschia ‘Tchizé’ dos Santos, stressing that the Luanda executive has a different position from the role of the private media sector.

Stressing that "citizen Welwitschia dos Santos" has the right to "freedom of expression", the minister reaffirmed the Government's strategy that removed the company from the daughter of former President José Eduardo dos Santos from managing a public television channel (TPA).

The businesswoman and former deputy of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) "has a position contrary" to what the Government establishes "as a State", said the minister.

‘Tchizé’ dos Santos challenged the decision by João Lourenço’s executive to remove from Semba (of which he is a manager) the management of the second channel of TPA and has complained about pressure to sell his stakes in the media area.

“We understand that there must be a separation between what the principle of private initiative management is and what the State should in fact take as a priority as management in the field of social communication”, explained Nuno Caldas Albino, who is visiting Portugal , with a group of public media managers, including the president of TPA.

In the context of support to private individuals, "we also offer a stimulus and incentive for the appearance of private media," added the minister, stressing that this strategy has had results.

"We have more private media outlets than we might have had four years ago and we are convinced that with more private media outlets we can also in fact lead to the structuring of better media," explained the minister.

On the other hand, the tutelage intends to reinforce the training of journalists and increase the technical criteria of production.
