Deejay Telio: rapper continues to do ‘karanganhada’ on new album

On Friday, producer and singer Deejay Telio edits “D'Ouro”, “more worked” than the debut album, but which remains a “karanganhada”, a Cape Verdean Creole word that means “party, tanning” and defines the music you make.

:

He was born in Angola, but has lived in Portugal since he was six. Created in Vale da Amoreira, in Barreiro, he started in the music “to dance kuduro”, then “to produce in 2007/2008 and to sing was in 2009”.

As a singer, he “always tried and tried”, until 2015 “really happened”, with the theme “Que safoda”. “In the midst of so much that doesn't work, you never know which one will work. You just try, you just try, you do it because you like it, you do it for fun, you never know for sure which one will bear fruit”, he told Lusa in an interview.

The themes of 23-year-old Deejay Telio account for millions of views on YouTube, with “Esfrega Esfrega” exceeding 30 million, and the musician and producer recognizes that this ‘online’ video sharing platform “was the lifeline.” For him and for "all the artists of today".

“Youtube is what gives us visibility, our work revolves around Instagram, Youtube, Spotify, this is saving us, this is what feeds us today. I always say: if they decide to erase all of that, we're screwed. We all”, he defended.

If it weren't for YouTube, Telio would have had to find a more conventional job. “If we came [immigrated] because of a better life, it is obvious that my mother will prefer that I get a job and help financially at home, than I am still dreaming, and with time I started to realize that if music do not give, I had to give myself to work”, he shared.

The mother always accepted that Telio dedicated himself to music, “but he had schedules”. “She came home from work tired and at least at 10 pm she wanted to be asleep. I respected it and from 22h00 / 22h30 it was no longer making a noise, but when it started to work it was already different, because I was already helping at home with my dream”, he recalled.

At the end of 2018, he edited “Happy Day”. On Friday comes “D’Ouro”, an album that before was already. “I am calling something that is not yet. I'm playing with people's psychological: ‘Have you heard the new Telio d’ouro album by Telio / the new Telio d’ouro album?’. People are unconsciously saying it is, without even listening”, he explained.

In addition, the second album is called “D’Ouro” because this phase of Deejay Telio’s life is “a phase with more self-confidence”.

In relation to "Happy Day", the musician and producer points out that "there is a certain growth". “I feel that [‘ D’Ouro ’] was more worked on, in terms of instrumentals, choruses, lyrics. I feel that it was more thought, ”he said.

The type of music he does remains the same: karanganhada. “I didn't invent any style, I always brought my base from my motherland, which is Angola, the 'afro-house' and the 'afro-beat', then I was inspired by more musical styles that I heard, and once that I grew up in Europe, like it or not, my bases also start to be part of that”, said Deejay Telio.

He ended up adopting 'karanganhada', a Cape Verdean Creole word he always liked, to explain the music he makes, since he was “always told” that the “beat” (beat, in Portuguese) he created “was differentiated”.

Karanganhada “means party, enjoyment, everything that is good, good‘ vibe ’”. "I say that my music is a party because, we all have problems in our lives, why do we listen to more depressing music?", he said.

In “D’Ouro”, which includes 12 themes, Deejay Telio did “everything but a‘ beat ’” and featured “two guests only”: Angolan ‘rapper’ Deedz B and English ‘rapper’ Yxng Bane.

The “D’Ouro” presentation concert, scheduled for March 5 at the Coliseu de Lisboa, will also be the “Happy Day” farewell concert.

About the show, he revealed that he is preparing “a lot of good” and that he invited Deedz B, Bispo and David Carreira to accompany him on stage. "The rest is a surprise", he said.
