Angola asks Gabon for explanations after incident involving CEEAC president

Angola asked Gabon for explanations following a diplomatic incident that involved an armed invasion of the home of the President of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC), Angolan Gilberto Veríssimo.

:

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Angolan diplomacy asked Gabon's chargé d'affaires in Angola, Wilfird Ndundji Mundungue, for explanations about the "unusual event" that occurred in Libreville, capital of Gabon, against Gilberto Veríssimo.

The national authorities consider that it was "an act of armed vandalization", involving some men wearing the uniform of the Gabonese armed forces, "who arbitrarily invaded the official residence of the president of the ECCAS".

According to reports, "the invaders psychologically molested the president of CEEAC and his assistant, who were inside the residence."

Angola "expressed deep displeasure at what had happened, vehemently repudiated what had happened and demanded plausible explanations from the Gabonese authorities" about the case.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, called for "severe measures to be taken against the perpetrators of such an act", stressing that it "put into question the security and physical integrity of the entities of that sub-regional organization, which exercise the its legitimate mandate in that country that holds the headquarters of ECCAS".

Lusa tried to contact the Gabon embassy in Luanda, which has not been possible so far.
