Laurindo Vieira: three suspects in pre-trial detention and two released under periodic presentation to the authorities

A warrant judge decided to keep three suspects involved in the death of Laurindo Vieira in preventive detention and decided to release two others, who were subject to bail and periodic presentations to the authorities.

Regarding the decision to release the two individuals, Manuel Halaiwa, spokesperson for the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), explained that their involvement in the case is based on the purchase of the cell phone that belonged to Laurindo Vieira.

"Regarding the release of the defendants (...), they are involved in the crime of reception, and reception is understood here as the purchase of goods with dubious provenance and/or stolen, due to the fact" that one of the defendants "purchased a of the victim's cell phones from his cousin (...), who had the mission of identifying citizens who made large withdrawals", he explained, quoted by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).

The SIC spokesperson added that the guarantee judge "ordered the release of the two receivers to await the processing of the case in freedom because their release will in no way interfere with the course of the investigation".

In this way, he said, cited by RNA, that one of the individuals released "was given a deposit of one million kwanzas", while the other was given a deposit of 200 thousand kwanzas, with "both having the obligation to present themselves every 15 days to the criminal police bodies".

"As for the detainees (...), the judge maintained their preventive detention, that is, the most serious measure of personal coercion was applied to them, that of preventive detention, as there were strong indications that they had committed the crimes that led to their detention", said Manuel Halaiwa, adding that "the process will continue under investigation".
