This Tuesday, the President defended the sovereignty of Palestine, urging the United Nations Security Council to take “concrete steps” towards the materialization of its resolutions, aiming to stop the conflict, “before the Palestinian people are completely exterminated”.

João Lourenço believes it is time for countries to show solidarity with the Palestinian people "because they have the same right to a territory within a free and sovereign State to be created".

"Before the Palestinian people are completely exterminated, while there is still time, the United Nations, particularly its Security Council, must take concrete steps towards the materialization of its own resolutions that reflect the expressed will of the overwhelming majority of its member states", he said.

For the head of state, who was speaking at the New Year greeting ceremony for the diplomatic corps accredited in Angola, the creation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine "is the only way to put a definitive end to this very violent old thing".

"Placing the two peoples, Jew and Palestinian, and the two States, Israel and Palestine, lived side by side, in peace and harmony, cooperating in a normal way, as is supposed to happen in neighboring countries that share common borders", he stressed.

The current war between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Islamist group in the south of Israeli territory, which killed around 1200 people and took more than 200 hostages (of which more than 100 remain in Gaza), on the 7th of October.

The President even regrets the war that persists in the Gaza Strip considering that, "despite Israel's right to defend the country and protect its citizens", there has been more than a hundred days of a "disproportionate reaction that has victimized more than 25,000 Palestinian citizens, including thousands of defenseless children".

"History will condemn us in the future for maintaining complicit silence today and doing nothing to put an end to this massacre of civilians taking place in the Gaza Strip", urged João Lourenço, speaking to diplomats accredited in Angola.

He expressed "apprehension" about the conflicts that have occurred in recent years on different continents, exemplifying the war between Russia and Ukraine: "The world cannot accept that the law of the strongest prevails over the established international order", he pointed out.

He condemned the unconstitutional changes in Africa, "which have been occurring frequently and with impunity for their authors", highlighting that Angola views the issue of peace, stability and national reconciliation in Africa as an essential component of its diplomacy.

Angola's initiatives to resolve conflicts that plague the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Mozambique and Sudan were also highlighted by João Lourenço.

João Lourenço also expressed his conviction that the internal achievements achieved by Angola on a material level "will have a more lasting and solid sustainability, if all this takes place within the framework of the construction of a democratic and lawful State".

"Within the scope of which we followed up on some of our nation's concerns which have to do with the improvement and consolidation of citizens' rights, fundamental freedoms and guarantees, transparency in governance and government proximity, the fight against corruption and impunity as well as the necessary independence and harmony between the different powers of the State", he concluded.
