“We are going to make this hospital one of the national reference units”, promises Minister of Health when reopening Hospital do Caluquembe

After 18 months of rehabilitation works, carried out by the Government, the Hospital Evangélico de Caluquembe, in the province of Huíla, was reopened with a new and larger operating room, as well as imaging services. The missionary hospital unit is assigned to the Evangelical Synodal Church of Angola (IESA).

Present at the inauguration were the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, the Secretary of the President of the Republic for Social Affairs, Fátima Viegas and the governor of Huíla, Nuno Mahapi.

The recently opened operating room has new facilities, allowing thoracic-cerebral operations, taking into account the possibility of intubating patients. This way, if there are specialists, the unit will be able to increase the number of surgeries performed per day from eight to 15.

The contract, which was carried out by Omatapalo, involved the partial demolition of the interior of the building, involving the construction of a new operating room, with an x-ray room, triage/medical office, and rooms for plastering, minor surgeries, anesthesiology office, etc.

With an inpatient capacity of 240 patients, the Hospital Evangélico de Caluquembe is the largest health unit in the northern region of Huíla. It serves more than 60 patients daily, coming not only from the province but from other provinces such as Benguela, Luanda, Namibe, Cunene, Huambo and Cuando Cubango.

Completed in 1947, it is the first clinical institution of the Evangelical Synodal Church in the country, having been expanded in 1972.

During the inauguration, the holder of the Health portfolio specified the convergence between the Church and the Executive to rehabilitate this unit: “The Church, through Reverend Diniz, requested support from the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who recognized the work that is being done by missionary hospitals and beyond, and responded to the request by mobilizing financial resources to ensure financing for the project”, said the minister.

In a statement from MINSA to which VerAngola had access, Sílvia Lutucuta also said that with this improvement in conditions, the unit will be able to provide higher quality health services, ensuring that all areas are equipped with diagnostic means that will ensure its capacity resolute.

“We are going to make this hospital one of the national reference units in primary health care, in health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, scientific research, continuous and specialized training”, she said, cited this time by Angop.

To health professionals, the minister asked for the reinforcement and development of educational activities within communities.
