"The Island" by Mónica de Miranda on display at a museum in Finland

According to information available on the museum's official website, "The Island" ("The Island", in Portuguese), "blending reality and fiction, explores a long trajectory of black presences in Portugal, bringing together intertwined narratives - based on the African liberation movements, migratory experiences and identity formations through a black feminist lens".

In this project, using video and photography, Mónica de Miranda "deploys the metaphor of the island as a utopian place of isolation, refuge and escape: a space for collective imaginations, which speak to new and old freedoms".

The artist, "anchored in cultural affinities and ecofeminism, considers the soil an organic repository of time and memory, where ancestral and ecological trauma, linked to colonial excavations, continues to manifest itself".

The museum adds that "The Island" "instigates the development of a more conscious relationship between bodies, the past and the lands that are inhabited – and everything they keep – towards possible regenerative futures".

The project, which includes a film and a series of photographs, is curated by London art gallery Autograph, and supported by Arts Council England.

"The Island" will be on display at the Turku Museum of Art from February 3rd to March 26th.
