Trial of Portuguese-Angolan businessman Carlos São Vicente postponed

The trial of Portuguese-Angolan businessman Carlos São Vicente, which was due to start this Wednesday, was postponed due to the delay in notifying the accused and for analyzing requests made by the parties.

:

Carlos São Vicente arrived at the Luanda court where he will be tried for crimes of embezzlement and tax fraud at 10:40 am, more than an hour after the scheduled start of the session.

Visibly thinner, the businessman, who is detained in the Viana jail, greeted his wife, Irene Neto, who was already in the room, with the presence of journalists accompanying the case.

In addition to his wife, daughter of Agostinho Neto, Angola's first president, other relatives of Carlos São Vicente will also attend the trial.

Before the start of the trial, which takes place in the 3rd criminal section of the Dona Ana Joaquina court, the defense again criticized the businessman's arrest.

"There is a principle of presumption of innocence that must be respected," the lawyer, François Zimeray, told journalists, stressing that freedom is the rule and prison should be an exception.

The lawyer stressed that dignity "must be respected" and regretted that Carlos São Vicente is serving as a scapegoat for the country's difficulties.
