Twelve road accidents in Luanda resulted this weekend in seven deaths, four of them in a single disaster, and nine injured, according to a report by a spokesman for the provincial command of the National Police in the capital.

The most serious accident happened on Saturday in the neighborhood of Fubu and involved a heavy car that was unloading cement and lost the brakes, crashing a dozen motorcycles and passers-by.

As Nestor Goubel explained to public radio in Angola (RNA), the vehicle suffered an overload in the air tank connected to the braking system and "gained an unrestrained course" ending up hitting 12 motorcycles (known as "kumpapata"), which were waiting for passengers and hit 13 people.

The accident resulted in the death of three women and a 2-year-old girl, two of the victims belonging to the same family, while the injured were sent to Luanda hospital.

Over the weekend, police also arrested 152 people for alleged involvement in criminal situations and seized 12 firearms.
