Covid-19: Africa with 1021 more deaths and 26,098 cases in the last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, Africa recorded an additional 1021 deaths from covid-19, for a total of 74,444, and 26,098 new cases of infection, according to the latest official pandemic data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the number of infected people is 3,107,979 and that of those recovered in the organization's 55 member states in the last 24 hours was 55,855 for a total of 2,538,888 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,426,978 infected and 36,984 deaths. South Africa alone, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,259,748 cases and 34,334 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 994,860 cases and 26,265 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 337,164 infections and 6,230 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 269,932 and that of deaths is 3439 and in Central Africa there are 79,045 cases and 1526 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 8,304 deaths and 151,723 infected, followed by Morocco, with 7784 fatalities and 453,789 infected.

Among the six most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 5343 deaths and 164,936 infected, Algeria, with 2816 deaths and 102,641 cases, Ethiopia, with 2004 fatalities and 128,992 infections, and Kenya, with 1716 deaths and 98,432 infected.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola recorded 422 deaths and 18,343 cases, followed by Mozambique (201 deaths and 22,996 cases), Cape Verde (115 deaths and 12,506 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5316 cases), Guinea -Bissau (45 dead and 2478 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 killed and 1066 cases).
