According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the number of infected people is 3,081,881 and the number of recovered people in the organization's 55 member states in the last 24 hours was 16,601 for a total of 2,483,033 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,410,169 infected and 36,133 deaths. South Africa alone, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,246,643 cases and 33,579 deaths.
North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 989,483 cases and 26,092 fatalities.
East Africa accounts for 336,206 infections and 6219 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 267,599 and that of deaths is 3468, and in Central Africa there are 78,424 cases and 1511 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 8249 dead and passed the 150 thousand infected (150,753), followed by Morocco, with 7767 fatal victims and 452,988 infected.
Among the six most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 5284 dead and 162,350 infected, Algeria, with 2812 deaths and 102,369 cases, Ethiopia, with 2003 fatalities and 128,616 infections, and Kenya, with 1713 deaths and 98,334 infected.
Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola has 420 deaths and 18,254 cases, followed by Mozambique (197 deaths and 22,334 cases), Cape Verde (115 deaths and 12,433 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5296 cases), Guinea -Bissau (45 dead and 2478 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 killed and 1066 cases).
The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.
The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,934,693 deaths resulting from more than 90.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
