Twelve hours of rain over Luanda leave 250 families homeless

The rains that fell on Saturday for 12 consecutive hours over Luanda province caused more than 140 floods and the displacement of 250 families, according to a provisional fire brigade.

According to the spokesman of the Civil Protection and Fire Service, Faustino Minguês, the most affected areas were the municipalities of Viana, Cacuaco, Talatona and Belas.

Flooding has been reported in 148 homes as well as on streets, in some cases due to overflow of water retention basins.

From the fire brigade, Faustino Minguês highlighted the collapse of a residence and the rescue of six family members inside a house in the urban district of Benfica.

A spokesman for the Civil Protection and Fire Service said these were provisional data, but it is already possible to signal an improvement in the picture compared to other rainy seasons.

"We are seeing a reduction in what the negative impacts of rainfall are. If we are comparing the data over the past three years, we will actually see a reduction in flooded homes and also in the record of fatalities”, said Faustino Minguês.

According to the official, this improvement is due to the work carried out by the municipal commissions with regard to the de-thinning of the shackles and the crossing lines to allow water to flow.
