Coronavirus: Country sets up multisectoral commission to strengthen surveillance measures

The Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday a multisectoral committee made up of several ministries to work on strengthening epidemiological surveillance measures against the new coronavirus, according to a statement issued this Thursday.

The multisectoral committee is made up of Defence and Security bodies and ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade, Media, Transport and the Provincial Government of Luanda.

Among the surveillance measures to be strengthened are: screening at the main international entry points of the country, through temperature control; training actions at the main points; guidelines to the general public on rules and hygiene; installation of hand washing devices; provision of personal protection equipment; intensification of influenza surveillance and strengthening of early warning systems and community surveillance.

The communiqué also states that the government is working with the Chinese authorities to ensure logistical support for Angolan citizens living in the city of Wuhan, particularly students.

By the end of Wednesday the number of deaths due to the new virus was 170 and those infected were over 7700 people.

The new coronavirus was first detected in December in the city of Wuhan, capital of Hubei province in central China.
