Minister of Health confirms first suspected coronavirus case in Angola

Sílvia Lutucuta, responsible for the Ministry of Health in the country, said this Wednesday afternoon that a patient with suspected coronavirus is currently hospitalized at Clínica Girassol, in Luanda.

It is known that the patient is a Chinese citizen that have arrived from China 12 days ago, with suspicion symptoms of high fever and cough.

The possibility of this becoming the first confirmed case of coronavirus in the country is on the table, and tests will be carried out in order to confirm or not this diagnosis, advances Angop. People who have been in contact with the patient are also being contacted in order to carry out medical examinations.

In a press conference, Sílvia Lutucuta appealed at the population to calm down, reaffirming that the country, and more specifically the health sector, is prepared to respond to possible cases of contamination.

This is the first suspected case of coronavirus contamination in the Southern African region.

The Angolan health authorities are expected to present new developments on the case of the interned citizen in the coming hours.

Coronavirus belongs to a family of viruses that cause the common flu, but also Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The first symptoms are high fever, cough and shortness of breath.

The Angolan Ministry of Health is training professionals and reinforcing epidemiological surveillance measures at borders, train stations, buses and in all places of great crowding.
