National Bank of Angola maintains interest rate at 15.5 percent

The National Bank of Angola (BNA) has decided to keep the benchmark interest rate at 15.5 percent, the central bank governor announced after the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee.

:

José de Lima Massano referred that, in December, the consumer price index changed by 1.91 percent (compared to the same period of the previous year), thus maintaining the deceleration trajectory and settling at 16.9 percent, the lowest level since 2015.

“We note the maintenance of the disinflationary process that allowed the achievement of the annual inflation target, despite the increase in the energy tariff, the introduction of VAT, the special consumption tax, as well as the exchange rate depreciation that occurred particularly in the last quarter of 2019”, he stated.

The BNA therefore decided to keep the rate at 15.5 percent, "seeking to maintain the course of price stability in the economy and support the adopted exchange rate regime", with a monetary policy "which will remain restrictive throughout 2020".

The next session of the committee will take place on March 27, 2020.
